Domestic violence incidents on the rise

The Police Ministry has released shocking statistics of domestic violence incidents, taking place in South Africa.

According to Police Minister Bheki Cele, more than 13 000 domestic violence incidents were reported in the country, during the period of the lockdown, from the 27th of March till the 3rd of June.

Cele was responding to a question in the National Council of Provinces, asked by the Economic Freedom Fighters. He explained that the total number of verified counts of domestic violence that was reported to the police was 13 192.

There have been arrests made with regards to the cases reported. The Minister said the total number of people who were arrested and prosecuted were 14 026.

Gauteng was reported to be the province with the most domestic violence cases, which resulted in 3 769 arrests and prosecutions.

The Western Cape was second- with 3 387 arrests and prosecutions.

The Eastern Cape, Free State and Kwazulu-Natal had between 1 300 and 1 700 people arrested and prosecuted for domestic violence under lockdown.

Meanwhile, Limpopo, Mpumalanga North West and the Northern Cape’s cases were all under 1 000.
